Engage, inspire, and energize your students' writing portfolios! The Writer In Residence program is a classroom-based follow-up to an Author Visit to get your students writing! Charley and Jo lead a day long writing workshop in your classroom that results in a publishable piece to share with peers at the end of the day. This process includes a typical author visit presentation with the addition of Jo sharing her day as a writer and the tools she uses. Charley and Jo then lead the students through the writing process guiding students to a finished product at the end of the day: an original piece of writing that they share with peers in their own performance!
Charley and Jo introduce prompts that motivate and inspire students to write from personal experiences. Students gain ideas about ways to capture their ideas, then organize and revise them into polished pieces that are virtually ready for publication. The prompts are deliberately designed so that students can develop writing for the day of the Writers in Residence visit, but also continue to work on them well beyond the visit. We've heard from teachers who were astonished that students were still working on writing they started with us a month or more after the visit!
We believe in giving students a chance to perform and interact with their peers, developing confidence and giving them a chance to shine. The Writers In Residence program provides multiple opportunities for students to perform and share in front of their peers. Students perform as part of a group in guided presentations, then share lines of their work in progress, building up to sharing their written pieces for feedback from their peers. This gradual scaffolding enables students who are reluctant to gain confidence in sharing their talents with others.
